Mick Ussery worked with my wife and me and a draftsman to design our country home. Mick planned and calculated all the construction costs in great detail. We chose the house site on our property with Mick and surveyed the house footprint together. This process formed a bond with Mick and us as we spent time aligning the house axis for the best views and southern exposure. Then as the house site was prepared by the grading contractor, Mick coached and lead us through the process of septic construction and concrete slab and basement wall construction. Then through framing, roofing, wall construction, flooring and fireplace construction Mick worked with us involving us in the many detailed decisions. We talked daily and Mick patiently guided us and always responded to every call and question. While home construction can be an awesome and intimidating experience, Mick was so patient explaining everything and never once became angry or frustrated with our questions. Building was a team process. He involved us in every decision. The house was carefully engineered structurally and built with great detail and attention to the highest quality. Mick worked to stay in budget yet allowed many upgrades to build a unique and beautiful custom home. The entire process was an exciting adventure to create our dream country home. Mick is an amazing contractor of highest integrity. He used skilled subcontractors who were artists in attention to structural soundness and beauty. Mick Ussery has built several houses for the Benito family. That we should have employed his services after completion of the first one is a testament in of itself.
Mick has several technical and specific skill sets which are very valuable in the construction industry. He trained and graduated as a geologist which is unusual for the average home builder. For us it was of great value. First in siting our houses on the virgin land on which we planned to build and second, in evaluating the quality of the soil for the wells and the septic systems and in placing them.
In his younger years before he ever thought of becoming a builder, he worked as a framer which has since served him well in running his own business – evaluation of architectural plans, selection of framers and inspection of the final framed house.
During his career he worked as project manager for several large companies and learned and perfected the “soup to nuts” process of project management. Mick is by nature extremely frugal and he brings that to the job and with it, the highest degree of integrity.
Once he has been provided with a set of plans and has had in-depth, on-site discussions with the client about what their vision is and understands their budgetary limitations if any, he will provide a bottoms-up estimate of the costs and the time-line to complete. This will include input from all of the major sub-contractors with whom he has had long-standing relationships. Over the years there have been some sub-contractors
who have proved unreliable or who appear to be padding their estimates. In these circumstances, Mick never hesitates to terminate them and find replacements. He is rigorous in his quest for quality, fair pricing and timeliness. Further, he will never “low-ball” an estimate in order to get a job.
Finally, there were several occasions in the past during a recession when the construction industry went through hard times. To make ends meet, Mick obtained his license as a building inspector.This has served him well over the years as he is thoroughly familiar with all the building codes and aids him with house inspection upon completion.
The first house that Mick built for us two years ago has had the usual settling and “punch-list” items. Mick is always available to return to get things fixed when needed.
In conclusion, Mick has delivered for our family. There have been the usual ups and downs created by the weather, exacerbated by COVID in the past 15 months which have resulted in material shortages and extraordinary increases in some prices. Nevertheless, Mick has essentially been able to deliver quality homes for us more or less on time and within budget.

Over the years, I have built several homes in different states with two other builders who have since become good friends of mine. Mick has joined the club!

From the initial purchase to the present day, our experience with Mr. Ussery has been nothing but positive.  From the start, our relationship was built on trust.  We were still living in California at the time of the purchase, and we relied on Mick to do the upgrades to the lower deck and side landscaping after the house had been paid for.  Our trust was well-rewarded.  Not only did Mick do the specified work, he went on to make some improvements that he deemed necessary and did not charge extra for them.  I'd have to say that's unusual in this day and age.  Over the years, the home has proved to be well-designed and well-built.  At the time of the sale, Mick assured us that we could call him if we had any questions about the house, and we have had several occasions to do so.  He's given us advice on the electrical system and plumbing and two years ago he removed a tree that was threatening the deck after a heavy storm.  This year, Mick installed a center island in our kitchen,  Again, the work could not have been better.  He kept scrupulous records of time and materials, completed the job on time, and all with a minimum of disruption to our lives.  Our experience with Mick Ussery has been positive on every level.  He's honest, straightforward, knowledgeable, and personable.  As for integrity, I'd regard his handshake as an ironclad contract.

When my husband and I first came to Brevard, NC, we bought our first house in Connestee Falls from Mick Ussery. The house was everything we were looking for except the basement wasn’t finished. Because we were unfamiliar with workmen in area Mick arranged to have the work completed. Mick is a very fair businessman and a knowledgeable contractor who is easy to work with and very responsive to the needs of the homeowner.  Through the 15 years that we lived in our house in Connestee we watched other properties being built, many with water runoff problems. That’s because many builders from outside the area don’t know how to build houses in the mountains. Over time we came to appreciate Mick’s knowledge of how to build a mountain home. He had installed a French drain in front of the house and another drain in front of the garage to move water around the house into the stream behind it.
